Nature: Self Care

An integral part of our holistic health, is ensuring that we take  time to care for ourselves mentally, physically and spiritually. Nature provides a wonderful atmosphere to practice self-care, it has been proven to help reduce stress, find clarity, and refresh your mind which can lead to improved mood, reduced anxiety and support a positive relationship with ourselves.

Being outdoors  physically and mentally removes distractions from our life which allows us to unplug and be more present.  Over time this enables us to have a more calm presence in our life and manage everyday stress.

Here are 5 strategies for spending time in Nature

1. Choose the Right Space

While it may be tempting to choose a  gorgeous destination, find a spot that isn't too out of your way which will make it easier and more accessible to incorporate time with nature into your regular routine. Some examples could include a nearby park, trail, or body of water. Even a quiet spot in your backyard can be a great space for experiencing the outdoors.

2. Kick Off Your Shoes

Allow yourself to truly relax when you are in your outdoor space. This could mean leaving your cell phone at home, listening to calming music, or being barefoot and allowing your fingers and toes to physically feel the earth. Know yourself, take whatever steps you need to create a space that allows you to 'unplug' from the world.

3. Cultivate your Creativity

Separating yourself from your everyday stressors will help give you a sense of clarity that can help promote creativity. Grab a journal or some art supplies and head outdoors. Allow yourself to observe and be inspired by the beauty in nature and create your own interpretation through words or drawings. Being creative can help slow us slow down and truly and appreciate the beauty in things we may otherwise have overlooked.

4.. Move and Stretch

Practicing gentle movements and stretching outdoors can promote a positive connection with our body. Allow yourself to appreciate and respect what your body is able to do. Practice slow, deep breathing outdoors in the fresh air, which can support physical and mental wellness through improving oxygen flow and serving as a therapeutic and mindful practice.

5.Nurturing Nature

Gardening is a wonderful way to be in nature, while participating in the nurturing and flourishing of  living plants. It is an opportunity to practice caring and showing kindness. Watching something grow from a seed to a flower or plant can be rewarding and improve feelings of satisfaction in daily life. If you are feeling pressed for time, you don't have to make a large commitment. Consider joining a community garden, a few potted plants, or having a small herb garden.
